The Deaf Community is an extremely large community or group of people that consists of people who are deaf, people who have slowly lost there hearing, people who were born with out hearing, or people who have genetic disorders that cause them to lose there hearing at some point in there life. They all fall under the umbrella term of people who are deaf, hard of hearing, hearing impaired and so on. The deaf Community doesn't just include people who have lost their hearing or were born with out it. This also includes translators and interpreters that can almost always speak or understand English or another speaking language.
As mentioned in the Impact of Cochlear Implants, there is a split in the deaf community due to the introduction of Cochlear Implants as they are designed to help people who can't hear or are hearing impaired. There are some people who don't mind the "help" at all and would definitely want to be able to hear using cochlear implants or those who have gotten Cochlear implants and were happy with the decision they made. These people are Lowercase "d" deaf people. They are apart of the community but have cochlear implants. Also interpreters can be apart of the Lowercase "d" deaf people culture. Of course, they can't be apart of the capital "D" Deaf people culture. These people are deaf and identify as deaf, and want to be a part of that culture. They feel as if that culture is a strong part of them and for whatever reason feel as if they were born this way for as reason. They would be slightly offended if people offered to try and "fix" them with cochlear implants.
